This comic makes more sense if you
keep up with video game news. If you don't, here's a brief summary:
There exists in this world a certain man.... a man named Jack
Thompson. There's a lot that can be said about him. What's
relavant to this particualar cartoon is thus: He's an attorney
who virulently opposes violence in video games, since there's
always the possibility that adult games could fall into the hands
of young impressionable minors. However, his methodology has been
called into question.
I think things went overboard when he played on Jonathan Swift's
"A Modest Proposal," whereby Thompson challeneged the
gaming community to produce a gory video game. Well, a similar
patch was released - and Thompson then claimed his proposal was
pure
sarcasm. The thing is, he also threw in an incentive - he
said that if a gaming company made his game, he'd give $10,000
to the charity of the producer's choice. That didn't materialize.
Not being a legal expert, I can't say for certain but I would
have thought that throwing in a Consideration like that would
render an otherwise deporable arguement valid... I'd have to ask...
I thought that he'd be bound by his own conditions...
Thompson has also sent e-mails and returned phone calls to members
of the gaming community.
We - I play games too you know - have been accused of all being
drug users & idiots. It looks like Jack likes to threaten
people who go against them with legal
action, Both the judicial and law enforcement variety.
Explaination of what's happening here:
To me, it looks like Jack acts childish by essentially saying,
"I'm telling on you!" whenever somebody does something
he doens't like. Pink Dragon still has some growing up to do herself,
so here we see a take on the "I am not touching you"
game little kids like to play. You know the one. A little kid
will hover his or her finger a few inches away from a friend and
say, "I am not touching you... I'm not touching you!"
And the other little kid is all like, "Ma/Pa make JimBobJoeBrown
stoppit. It's annoying!"
As for the technique, this was drawn with the wacom tablet. This
idea never touched a paper. I've split up the cartoon into two
large panels. One 760 pixel wide image wasn't big enough to show
how angry Jack is.
The last time I checked, Political Cartoons were still legal
in this country. And I certainly not the only person whos ever
used art and the internet to poke fun of him.
